Mexican Supreme Court On Thursday a group of companies led by one of the country’s wealthiest men rejected legal remedies challenging more than $2.6 billion in tax debts.
The court ruled against seven of nine legal remedies, similar to injunctions called “amparos”, filed by various companies of Ricardo Salinas Pliego. It has not yet ruled on the other two. These loans date back more than a decade.
Decisions cannot be appealed, but Grupo Salinas, the dominant group, and Mexico’s tax authorities can negotiate a settlement. However, this could be complicated, as Salinas says he is being targeted because of his criticism of the current administration.
Salinas, a TV, retail and banking veteran, is one of the most vocal critics of the current administration.
The government also separately suspended two casinos owned by Grupo Salinas companies this week over alleged money laundering, which Grupo Salinas denied.
After Thursday’s ruling, Grupo Salinas said it had not ruled out going to other international courts to avoid “outrageous and illegal double accusations.”

But Sheinbaum has tried to undercut that line of argument. In late September, when Salinas’s total tax debts were revealed, the President said, “The debts are not politicized, they are paid, it’s that simple.”
She then said that if Salinas decided to pay, he could be eligible for the same potential rebate that any other overdue taxpayer would be. “But he has to decide to pay,” she said.
Grupo Salinas says the tax authority has not given them accurate information about the amounts owed and says at times the authorities have not followed the agreements they reached.
On Thursday, Grupo Salinas said through X that “today is a dark day for justice and the rule of law”. Mexico,” adding that the court “acted in the service of political power, not justice.”
