Mexico chairman claudia sheinbaum The northern border state of Tamaulipas promised a thorough investigation Wednesday into the killing of six civilians by soldiers a day earlier.
The Mexican army said late Tuesday that some of its soldiers on patrol on the highway linking Ciudad Mante and Tampico fired on a vehicle that tried to hit them. Five people died at the scene and another died later in hospital. Two others were injured.
The army statement did not say whether the people in the vehicle were armed or not.
On Wednesday, Sheinbaum was asked about the incident during a morning news briefing and said that “The use of firearms should be rational. There is a law that establishes that under what circumstances.”
The military said Tuesday that the soldiers involved were relieved of their duties and turned over to the attorney general’s office, which is conducting a parallel investigation to the military justice system.
