Mexico City:
Nineteen people were killed and 22 injured in a violent collision between a double-decker bus and a truck in northwest Mexico on Tuesday, authorities said.
“Nineteen bodies have been counted,” Sinaloa state Attorney General Sara Quinonez said in a video posted on social media, adding that it would take time to identify the bodies.
Officials were examining the charred remains of the passenger bus which was traveling from the city of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco to Los Mochis in Sinaloa state.
Sinaloa state civil defense director Roy Navarrete told a news conference that the truck and bus, carrying nearly 50 people, collided head-on and burst into flames.
Fatal road accidents are common in Mexico and are often caused by high speeds, poor vehicle condition or driver fatigue.
There has also been an increase in accidents involving freight trucks on the country’s highways.
In July 2023, a passenger bus ran off a mountain road and fell into a canyon in the southern state of Oaxaca. This was one of the worst accidents in recent years, killing at least 29 people.
Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among immigrants who travel the dangerous overland route to the United States.
