Meta to launch first Llama 3 AI model next week: report

Meta is preparing to launch its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model, Llama 3, in the summer, which it says will bring new features to its chatbots. Now, a new report suggests the tech giant could launch two smaller AI models as early as next week, much earlier than previously reported timelines. The company is likely to launch the Llama 3 7b and Llama 3 13b variants of the model now and keep the larger 32b and 65b models for later launches.

Additionally, given the company’s focus on computer vision, the models are likely to offer multiple input methods as well.

Adding powerful computer vision capabilities would also be consistent with the company’s product lineup (Meta Quest series and Meta Ray Ban). The company is said to be developing a successor to the Meta Quest Pro 2 and may look to tap into more immersive augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The same goes for Meta Ray Ban, which was recently upgraded with multi-modal AI capabilities that allow AI to recognize specific objects and provide information about them.

The two smaller AI models believed to be launching next week are the Llama 3 7b and Llama 3 13b models. The former has 7 billion parameters and the latter has 13 billion parameters. These are more specialized models that can take on smaller but specific tasks and don’t require multiple GPUs.

Just like its predecessor, it is likely that the new model will also remain open source and Meta will make its weights public. Smaller models may also have guidance and chat boards.
