Meta seeks comment on action against AI-powered images of Indian and US celebrities

The oversight committee did not mention the names or details of the celebrities.

New Delhi:

Social media giant Meta’s oversight board has invited public input to decide action over obscene images generated by artificial intelligence in two cases in India and the United States related to public figures.

One of the two cases involved the posting of AI-generated images of naked women on Instagram, said the committee, which determines content moderation.

“The image was created using artificial intelligence (AI) to resemble a public figure in India. The account that posted this content only shares AI-generated images of Indian women. Most of the users who reacted have accounts in India, and Deep Counterfeiting is increasingly becoming a problem in India,” it said.

Although the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has asked social media companies to remove fake images and videos generated by artificial intelligence and issued advisories asking these platforms to strictly comply, Meta is seeking public opinion on the issue.

Fake or morphed images and videos of several Indian actresses such as Rashmika Mandanna and Priyanka Chopra Jonas are circulating on social media such as Instagram, Facebook and went viral on media platforms.

In the India-related case, a user reported the content to Meta for pornographic content, but the report was automatically closed because it was not reviewed within 48 hours, the committee said.

“The user subsequently appealed to the Commission. As a result of the Commission’s selection of the case, Meta determined that its decision to retain the content was wrong and removed the post for violating Community Standards on Bullying and Harassment,” the Commission said.

As per the IT Rules 2021, online platforms must remove full or partial nudity within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.

The committee is also seeking public comment on a case in the United States in which obscene, AI-generated images of American celebrities were posted in a Facebook group.

The commission said most users who reacted to the post had U.S. accounts.

In this case, the image has been deemed a violation of Facebook’s Community Standards and removed.

The commission said the window for public comment on the case will be open for 14 days, ending on April 30.

The oversight committee did not mention the names or details of the celebrities.

However, the post shared a link to a news article mentioning the names of Indian and American celebrities who had been affected by such content
