Meta, Google and Microsoft are working on a deal to combat political deepfakes

The two companies will agree to develop methods to identify, label and control AI-generated media.

Washington:

Tech giants including Meta, Microsoft, Google and OpenAI are working on a deal to jointly combat artificial intelligence content aimed at deceiving voters ahead of key elections around the world this year, the companies said on Tuesday.

The two companies are currently in talks and the so-called “agreement” on deepfakes and other dangerous content will be announced on Friday during the Munich Security Conference.

“In a critical year for global elections, technology companies are developing a deal to combat AI deception targeting voters,” a Meta spokesperson said in an emailed statement to AFP on Tuesday.

“Adobe, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, TikTok and others are working together to achieve this common goal,” the statement added.

The two companies will agree to develop methods to identify, label and control AI-generated images, videos and audio intended to deceive voters, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the existence of the project.

The idea comes at a time when big tech companies are under intense pressure over concerns that artificial intelligence-driven applications could be misused in a crucial election year.

Meta, Google and OpenAI have agreed to use a common watermark standard to mark images generated by their artificial intelligence applications, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot or Google’s Gemini (formerly Bard).

Recent convincing examples of artificial intelligence deepfakes have only heightened concerns about this easily accessible technology.

Last month, robocalls imitating U.S. President Joe Biden were sent to tens of thousands of voters urging people not to vote in the New Hampshire primary.

In Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party used artificial intelligence to generate speeches from its jailed leader.
