Met Office issues strong wind warning as Storm Nelson brings instability ahead of Easter

Yellow warnings for strong winds have been issued for many coastal areas in southern England, with Storm Nelson expected to bring unsettled weather to the UK in the days leading up to Easter.

The Met Office said the warning, which applies from 7am to 6pm on Thursday, extends from places such as St Ives and Penzance in the south-west to Brighton.

Forecasters said wind gusts could reach 70 mph and there was a risk of hail and thunderstorms.

The Met Office said: “Strong winds and large coastal waves may cause dangerous conditions.”

It added that the weather could affect transport networks, including ferry services, and there was a “small possibility” of power outages.

“Large waves and beach material are being thrown onto the seafront, coastal roads and properties, with the potential for injury and risk to life being small.”

Sky News weather producer Christopher England said there would be strong gusts along the coast, along with “squally showers, bringing the risk of hail and lightning”.

He added: “There will be more heavy showers or longer periods of rain tomorrow due to the storm named Nelson in Spain, and wind gusts of 70mph will be expected along the English Channel coast tomorrow, with conditions set to continue into next week.

“But showers will become more isolated over the weekend and the weather will become milder.”

The Met Office said “heavy rainfall” will hit England and Wales on Wednesday, while showers will continue in Northern Ireland. In Scotland, conditions will become dry overnight.

Showers will move northward in most areas on Thursday.

What does the Met Office think about the Easter weekend?

Windy showers are expected on Good Friday, with more frequent showers in the south and west.

Showers are likely to continue in the same area on Saturday, but it looks to be brighter further north and east.

Easter Sunday looks set to be the “best day of the week” – before things get even more precarious on Monday.
