A further snow warning has been announced for parts of northern England, as sub-zero temperatures and outbreaks of rain and mountain snow could bring icy conditions. A warning has been issued from 5 am to noon on Tuesday.
Dan Holley, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “As Storm Claudia retreats southwards, high pressure in the north-west will drive cold air northwards from the Arctic across the UK. This will bring much colder and generally drier than recent days, as well as the risk of winter hazards such as snow and ice.”
Snow and ice warnings remain in place for parts of north-east England, south-west Scotland, Yorkshire and the Humber and northern areas of Scotland for Wednesday and Thursday.
The warning will be in effect for northern Scotland from 6pm Tuesday to 9pm Thursday and for north-east England from 6am Wednesday to 6pm Thursday. The weather office has predicted about 2 to 5 cm of snowfall at lower levels.
UK Health Protection Agency has issued a cold weather warning for the Midlands and parts of northern England from 8am on Monday. The alert is in place for four days, covering the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber, and will be lifted at 8am on Friday.
A Cold Health Alert is issued when there is potential for significant impacts on health and social care services, which could include increased deaths among older people with health problems, increased demand for remote health services and impacts on the workforce, which could affect the delivery of services.
