Williams’ role is her first as co-chair, seven years after her sister Serena held the position. Beyoncé was the honorary chair in 2013 and Kidman was co-chair in 2003 and 2005.
Wintour oversees the annual fundraiser, which last year provided a record $31 million to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
A grand host committee has also been announced and will be chaired by designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoe Kravitz, and will include musicians Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, LISA, Sam Smith and Yseult; dancer Misty Copeland; actors Teyana Taylor, Elizabeth Debicki, Gwendoline Christie and Lena Dunham; basketball player a’ja wilsonmodels Alex Consani, Paloma Elsesser and Lauren Wasser, Vogue editor Chloe Malle, and artist Anna Weyant,
The dress code for the May 4 celebration has not yet been announced, but it will be in line with the theme of “Costume Art,” which was unveiled last month as the institute’s next spring exhibit. This exhibition aims to celebrate the “clothed body” in art across the centuries, combining garments with museum objects to show fashion’s long interconnectedness with various art forms.
Max Hollein, the museum’s CEO and director, said last month: “This is a show that can live in a really engaging way in the museum and draw from all the different areas of our collection – paintings, sculpture, drawings.”
Under the supervision of Andrew Bolton, the institute’s curator in charge, the exhibition will be organized around different body types, including the “nude body,” the “classical body” and less traditional themes such as the “pregnant body” and “the aging body.”
The “Costume Art” exhibition will also inaugurate a new, expanded gallery space. The 1,115-square-metre (12,000 sq ft) Condé M. Nast Gallery, located outside the museum’s Great Hall, will provide a major platform for fashion and help control crowds at heavily attended exhibitions.
Converted from the museum’s former retail store, this new area will house all spring Costume Institute exhibitions and other displays.
Andrew Bolton said the new gallery space would be “an important moment for the department, acknowledging the important role of fashion not only within art history but also within contemporary culture.”
Meanwhile, Venus Williams returned to competition in July at the age of 45 after nearly 18 months away from the tour, becoming the oldest player to play singles at the US Open since 1981. Serena Williams recently dismissed the idea of returning to tennis.
