Memphis block party shooting kills 2, injures 14

Two people were killed and 14 others injured in a shooting at a block party in Memphis, the capital of Tennessee, on Saturday, police said. No details about the suspect or the cause of the shooting are available at this time.

The Memphis Police Department responded to a shooting in the 2400 block of Kearns Avenue at 7:19 p.m. local time.

Three of the injured were taken to hospital in critical condition, while 11 others arrived in private vehicles, police said in a statement posted on X.

“Officers found five victims at the scene with apparent gunshot wounds, three of whom were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. Two males were pronounced deceased,” a police statement said.

“Police were notified that 11 additional shooting victims also arrived at area hospitals in private vehicles, bringing the total number of victims to 16,” the statement added.

Video on social media showed a black car spinning in circles. Gunshots were heard in the background, and several people gathered at the scene fled.

Memphis police have cordoned off the area while they investigate, local news outlet FOX13 reported.

Police said the block party was held “without a permit.” The block party was attended by about 200 to 300 people.
