Srinagar, 1 July (KDC): The Jammu and Anti -Kashmir Bureau of Corruption (ACB) on Tuesday said that it has arrested a seated District Development Council (DDC) member Mohammad Shaban Chopan and his colleague to allege a vacant signed check to bribe and accept a vacant signed check and accept a vacant signed check for a local school in a local school.
According to an official statement issued by the ACB to the news agency Kashmir.com (KDC), the bureau received a written complaint from the owner of a scholarly boarding school, including a swimming pool and guest house in Srinagar. The complainant said that he had been running the convenience in peace for years, but recently an official inspection – orchestrated orchestrated by DDC member Mohammad Shabon Chopan – to demand a bribe.
The complainant further alleged that Chopan, a resident of Dara Harwan, used his tout Ghulam Mohammad Khathana to demand a bribe of 5,00,000. The complainant was asked to pay of 50,000 as the first installment with a vacant signed check, the remaining amount was paid after the necessary approval was paid.
Assuming that the inspection was a pressure strategy to withdraw money, the complainant approached the ACB, who then began a prudent verification. The verification report confirmed that illegal satisfaction was actually demanded by the public servant through his colleague.
Subsequently, FIR No. 12/2025 was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended), which was taught along with Section 61 (2) of the Indian Justice (BNS).
A trap team was formed, and during the operation, both DDC members and their touts were caught in red, while an empty signed check was accepted in and 50,000 cash and the complainant. Both were caught on the spot.
Further investigation is going on.
The ACB has reiterated its commitment to fight corruption and urged the public to report such cases through its dedicated helpline or the nearest ACB office. (KDC)
