About 1,200 couples tied the knot in a group ceremony on the outskirts of Mexico City on Wednesday, setting a record for an annual Valentine’s Day tradition in the town of Nezahualcoyotl.
Couples of different generations have said “I do” in town squares, some to save money, others to eventually enter into formal, long-term relationships.
“Weddings are expensive,” newlywed Rosolin Ruiz, 28, told AFP.
Dressed in white, she married her partner Ricardo Reyes, 30, in an “easier” way through this year’s “group marriage.”
Yosimar Carrasco and Alejandra Godinez, 37, were motivated by a desire for a “different experience,” while for Pilar, 40 For Pilar Hernandez and Susana Inocente, this is an opportunity for LGBTQ couples to assert “equal rights.”
The square erupted in applause when Sonia Cruz, director of the state civil registration office, announced that the couple was “legally married” and invited them to kiss.
This year’s ceremony, hosted by the local mayor’s office, also presented awards to three of Nezahualcoyotl’s longest-married couples, one of whom was married for 50 years and received a television and armchairs.
A similar Valentine’s Day mass wedding was held in Nicaragua, with 200 couples getting married on the shores of Lake Solotlán in Managua.
