Carney was speaking to reporters in South Korea for the first time since then Trump’s comments Claiming that Canada “has apologized for its actions”.

“I have a very good relationship with [with Carney]I like him a lot, but what he did was wrong. He was very good. “They apologized for what they did with the ad.” us President told reporters earlier on Air Force One.

He told reporters, “It was a false advertisement. It was just the opposite – Ronald Reagan loved tariffs.”

A one-minute ad launched by Ontario Premier Doug Ford on October 14 combined video clips from Reagan’s 1987 address, saying the tariffs led to a trade war and economic disaster.

Carney, speaking to reporters after attending the Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea, said he had personally apologized to Trump when the two attended a dinner hosted by the South Korean president on Wednesday.

Carney confirmed Trump’s comments Friday, saying, “I have apologized to the president.” “The President was angry.”

Carney said Canada is fully prepared to resume trade talks with the United States as soon as the Trump administration feels similarly “ready.”

The Prime Minister also confirmed that he had reviewed the ad with Ford before it aired, but said that he had opposed using it.

“I told Ford I didn’t want to move forward with the ad,” he said.

In his actual address, Reagan defended a narrow application of tariffs, but condemned their use broadly.

The 40th president said, “High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries, and lead to fierce trade wars. Then the worst happens, markets shrink and collapse, businesses and industries close and millions lose their jobs.”

“The path to prosperity for all nations is to reject protectionist legislation and promote fair and free competition,” Reagan said in the address.

Throughout its tenure, the Reagan administration’s policies supported free markets and free trade.

Trump labeled the ad “devious” and announced he was suspending trade talks. Canada,

Following a response from the US President, Ford agreed to stop the ad campaign, but only after it aired during World Series baseball games.

Trump appeared to be angered by the decision and wrote on his Truth Social social media platform that the ad “should be immediately removed.”

The President said, “But they let it go on during the World Series last night, even knowing it was a fraud.”

“Due to this serious misrepresentation of the facts and a hostile act, I am increasing the tariffs on Canada by 10 per cent more than what they are paying now,” he said.

Canada already faces tariffs from the US, including 35 per cent on many of its products and 50 per cent on steel and aluminium.

On Friday, Trump confirmed that he had a face-to-face meeting with Carney at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit earlier this week.

Asked whether the US would resume trade talks with Carney’s administration, Trump said, “No, but I have a very good relationship. I like them very much.”

The US president said, “I think what he did was wrong, but he apologized.”

Meanwhile, Carney said his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday were a turning point in relations after years of tension. The last formal meeting between the leaders of Canada and China was in 2017 when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a brief conversation with Xi at a meeting in San Francisco.

In recent years, Canadian citizens have been detained and executed in China, and Canadian security officials concluded that China interfered in at least two federal elections. Carney said he also discussed foreign interference with Xi, among other issues.

Carney said the trip to Asia was part of efforts to reduce Canada’s dependence on the United States. “It may not happen overnight, but we are moving very quickly,” he said.
