Manitoba Matis Federation turned down Carney's invitation to talk on major projects

Ottawa – Manitoba Matis Federation is inviting Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss the law of controversial major projects of his government, saying that it will not attend the meeting with another Métis group, saying that it says that there is no reason for this.

The Federation, which represents the Red River Metis, says that Carney’s decision to include the Metis Nation of Ontario at Thursday’s meeting reduces the integrity of the assembly and puts government plans at risk for major projects.

Federation President David Chartered says Ottawa is also carrying forward the Metis National Council by involving it in the meeting, despite the fact that it has only two provincial members due to conflicts related to Metis Nation of Ontario.

Carney promised meetings with the first nation, Inute and Metis as indigenous leaders said that they were not adequately consulted on the law of major projects and feared that the projects would proceed without their input.

While the Manitoba Matis Federation usually supports the law, now says that Ottawa interacts with “illegitimate bodies” if the push is at risk to approve Ottawa’s major projects.

First Nations and other Metis groups say the communities represented by the MNO have no claim to identify Metis heritage and Ottawa and Ontario, they have no right to identify them.
