The Indian football team braved a late goal from Estonia to win a hard-fought 4-3 match in the Turkish Women’s Cup on Wednesday, the team’s first win against a European country. Striker Manisha Kalyan scored two goals and the Chaoba Devi-coached side created history as the Indian senior women’s team had never before won over a UEFA confederation team in an official match. Till half time the teams were tied at 1-1. Manisha scored in the 17th and 81st minutes while Indumati Kathiresan (62nd minute) and Pyari Xaxa (79th minute) scored the other goals for India.

Lisette Tamic (32′), Vlada Kubasova (88′) and Mari Liis Lillema (90′) scored for Estonia.

In the match played at the picturesque Gold City Sports Complex, Blue Tigresses got off to a good start and took the lead through Manisha’s goal.

After Lisette Tamic equalized for Estonia, India took a strong 4-1 lead with three goals from Indumathi, Xaxa and Manisha.

Just as it looked like Indian Women were headed for a resounding win, Estonia made a last-ditch effort to equalize by scoring twice through Vlada Kubasova (88′) and Marie Liis Lillema (90′).

However, the Indian defense did a good job in the remaining time and secured a memorable win.

Initially, India started with the intention of defeating Estonia on the counter, using their pacey wingers to drive deep into the opponents’ box.

It remained in the hands of the Blue Tigresses from the start, as Kartika’s interception on the right allowed Pyari to escape into the space behind the Estonian defence.

The Indian striker took her shot past Estonian goalkeeper Karina Kork, but it went straight and was eventually cleared.

Pyari often served as the focal point of counter-attacks for India, and she created a big opportunity for the Blue Tigresses in the eighth minute when she made a sharp turn to leave her marker stranded on the halfway line and for Manisha Played a through ball. There is an acre of space on the left.

However, the latter spoiled his shot.

However, Manisha made up for her earlier miss when she gave Pyari the lead for India with a clever back-heel that took Anju Tamang behind the opposition defence.

A melee broke out inside the Estonia box as Anju’s shot was blocked, but Manisha collected the ball and fired it in at the near post from a narrow angle.

India gave up too much control of the ball after taking the lead and had to pay the price after half an hour. Vlada Kubasova sent an accurate cross from the left, which Tomic accepted.

Chaoba Devi’s side tightened the screws as they came out in the second half, forcing a mid-block which meant that Estonia could no longer control proceedings in the middle of the park.

India took the lead after an hour thanks to Indumati.

Soumya Guguloth initiated the attack on the right, passed it to Anju, who passed it to Pyari, who in turn passed it to Indumathi on the edge of the box. The Indian midfielder fired a left-footed shot which went into the bottom corner.

The Blue Tigresses began to apply more pressure, and with some cleverness from Anju and a little desire and individual brilliance from Pyari, the third goal was scored.

Soumya snatched the ball in the middle and played it towards Anju on the right side. However, the latter was in an off-side position and kept himself as far away from the ball as possible.

Meanwhile, Pyari sprinted down the right wing to get there before any of the Estonian defenders. She entered the box from the right, cut inside and placed her left-footed effort into the bottom corner to double India’s lead.

Manisha scored the fourth, her second of the day, just minutes later, controlling a cross from Sandhya Ranganathan, again at the near post. PTI ah am ah am am
