Imphal, Nov 5 (IANS) Security forces have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Manipur during the last 24 hours, while also arresting two inter-state drug smugglers and seizing 2 kg of brown sugar from their possession. Officials gave this information on Wednesday.
Security forces, including Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, in a joint operation have recovered arms and ammunition and other material from Imphal East and Thoubal districts, an official said.
The recovered weapons include one foreign-made M16 rifle, one SBBL PAG, two .22 rifles, six 9 mm pistols, one magazine each and a repeater gun.
The recovered ammunition included five grenades, two detonators and some cartridges of different calibres.
Manipur Police arrested two interstate drug smugglers with about 2 kg of brown sugar worth over Rs 1 crore from Sekmai Pangaltabi area of Imphal West district, the official said.
The arrested illegal drug dealers were identified as Mohammad Mustaqeem, 28, and Umar Khan, 30, residents of Thoubal district.
The official said security forces are continuing operations against terrorists and search operations and area dominance are being carried out in border, mixed-populated and sensitive areas of all districts.
According to the official, a total of 115 checkpoints/checkpoints were established in various districts of Manipur, both in the hill and valley areas, to prevent untoward and illegal activities of enemy elements and suspicious vehicles. He said security forces have provided escort to several vehicles, including trucks carrying essential commodities, on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37).
Strict security measures have been taken at all sensitive locations, and a security convoy has been provided in sensitive stretches to ensure free and safe movement of vehicles.
Manipur Police has urged people not to believe in rumors and be cautious of false videos. A police statement said, “The authenticity of any baseless video, audio clip etc being circulated can be confirmed from the central control room. Additionally, there are chances of many fake posts being circulated on social media. It is warned that uploading and circulating such fake posts on social media will attract legal action with consequences.”
The police administration also appealed to the concerned people to immediately return the looted arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or the nearest security force post.
