Imphal, Oct 20 (IANS) In a poignant ceremony held at the 5th Battalion Assam Rifles headquarters in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district, a total of 161 personnel of the paramilitary force gathered to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives resisting the Chinese invasion in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh during the 1962 India-China war.
On this solemn occasion, heartfelt tributes were paid to the courage of the 47 brave soldiers, their loyalty and enduring spirit of comradeship.
A defense spokesperson said the ceremony began with the wreath-laying ceremony, where floral tributes were laid in memory of the martyred heroes. Each wreath symbolizes the nation’s and the Regiment’s enduring gratitude to those who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
The atmosphere was reverent, the spokesman said, as the assembled soldiers paid silent tribute to a legacy of bravery that continues to inspire generations.
After the tribute, a reflective session was held to commemorate the extraordinary gallantry and teamwork displayed by the soldiers during the conflict. His unwavering determination in the face of overwhelming odds exemplified the highest standards of military service and national devotion.
The gathering served not only as a reminder but also as a reaffirmation of the values that define the ethos of Assam Rifles. The event concluded with a ceremonial guard of honour, presented with precision and solemnity by the assembled soldiers. This final gesture underlined the regiment’s deep respect for its fallen and its commitment to preserving their legacy.
The Sino-Indian War of 1962 remains a defining chapter in India’s military history and the sacrifices made at Tawang continue to resonate in the armed forces.
Through this ceremony, the Assam Rifles reaffirmed its pledge to honor its heroes and maintain the traditions of service and sacrifice, which are the cornerstone of its identity, the spokesperson said. Tengnoupal district shares an unfenced border with Myanmar.
