India’s legendary former hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and table tennis icon Sharath Kamal joined the ride which was attended by people from all age groups and backgrounds including school students, Namo Cycling Club members and Puducherry University students.
According to the Sports Ministry, the Fit India Sunday on Cycle initiative was conducted in more than 700 districts at 2 lakh locations across the country, with more than 20 lakh people participating during the year.
Mandaviya said, “When we started this initiative a year ago, it was organized at only five locations with around 500 participants. Today, it is held every Sunday at over 10,000 locations across the country, with over 10 lakh citizens participating regularly.”
The historic annual festival here turned into a complete fitness carnival, with activities like Zumba, Carrom, Chess, Mallakhamb, Silambam, Yoga, Rope Jumping along with many recreational games attracting huge crowds.
The event was organized simultaneously at over 10,000 venues across the country, Sports Authority of India and Khelo India centres, Hazaribagh, Kargil, Patiala, Lucknow, Golaghat, Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh, Hisar, Tinsukia, Visakhapatnam, Kashipur in Uttarakhand, Cuttack in Uttarakhand.
The celebrity gathering also included Arjuna Award winning archers Jyoti Surekha and Abhishek Verma from SAI Sonipat.
The much awaited Fit India Mobile App Carbon Credit Incentive was also launched.
The three cyclists who earned the most carbon credits were honored during the event. Citizens can cycle and earn carbon credits, which can then be redeemed.
“From now on, every month, cyclists from every state and union territory will be mapped through the Fit India mobile app and the top three performers will be incentivized. This is to encourage and reward citizens for taking up cycling as a daily habit,” Mandaviya said.
Fit India ambassadors and influencers who have been leaders and supporters of Sunday on Cycle were also honoured.
Sreejesh said, “Staying fit is not just about training for medals, it is about building discipline and balance in everyday life. Cycling is a simple habit, but when adopted collectively, it builds a healthy society and a strong nation. I am glad that the Union Sports Minister’s Fit India Sunday on Cycle initiative has turned fitness into a mass movement, where families, youth and professionals participate with equal enthusiasm.”
