manchester united co-owner mr. Jim RatcliffeJoel Glazer and Avram Glazer meet in Carrington on Thursday, Michael Carrick Preparing to face Manchester City in his first game as manager.
Ruben Amorim was sacked last week – after 14 months of lackluster and increasingly vitriol – Darren Fletcher Temporarily airborne before another former Red Devils midfielder takes over.
Carrick was appointed as United’s manager for the remainder of the season on Tuesday, two days after Ratcliffe was in town for a scheduled executive committee meeting along with Joel and Avram Glazer.
this press association It is understood the club moved it to Manchester to ensure leadership can support the new manager on-site and minimize disruption ahead of his first game in charge.
The trio arrived after a worrying fortnight at United, where anger was boiling among the fanbase and the 1958 side planned to protest ownership ahead of their Premier League home game against Fulham on February 1.
A Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime before a trip to Arsenal provides an unenviable start to Carrick’s job, which former team-mate Gary Neville believes should not extend beyond this season.
“I hope he does well,” Neville said. “There is no consideration whatsoever, both for Michael and the club, for Michael to take the job beyond this season.
“If he wins every game, look, we could be sitting here in a season where he’s doing well and we always think the fans are excited and they’re fifth in the Champions League or whatever. If the performances are good then that could happen and we could all be affected.”
“Honestly, I think (you have to look at others) at the end of the season when you have (Mauricio) Pochettino, (Thomas) Tuchel and (Carlo) Ancelotti.
“I said that to (Brazil coach) Carlo Ancelotti. I just think purely because he’s 66 years old, he probably has the best job in the world right now. He probably has one job left at club level.”
“If someone is patient, calm and has Premier League experience.”
United have decided to give Carrick a short-term role to allow director of football Jason Wilcox to conduct a thorough recruitment process over the coming months.
Former captain Roy Keane mentioned Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as potential options, retorting when Neville suggested the latter was unrealistic on the Insisting Football podcast.
“But isn’t it weird that we’re talking about choice and you’re excluding people,” Keane said. “But United should be thinking ‘let’s try to do our best’.”
Keane feels these high standards were not met when assembling Carrick’s coaching staff.
England’s Gareth Southgate’s Steve Holland has joined a backroom team that also includes Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans.
The former worked with Carrick at Middlesbrough – both men have been managers – and Evans was on Fletcher’s staff and recently resigned as United loan manager.
Keane said: “(Carrick) was on the beach with Jonny Evans two weeks ago.
“Jonny Evans left Manchester United as loan manager four or five weeks ago and then Fletcher gave him a job, oddly enough, for two games.
“Fletch is gone and Carrick offers him a job. It’s great, isn’t it? We should all go to Barbados for a week.
“You’re looking at bringing your coaching staff in, we complimented one of the coaches saying he was experienced[in Holland]and then we let the other two go, Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans.
“What has Jonny Evans done to become Manchester United’s first-team coach? Four weeks ago he quit his job as loan manager and, ironically, he’s back working with the first-team. That’s a big step, isn’t it?”
