Srinagar, Nov 17 (IANS) A dry fruit vendor, who was released after questioning in connection with the investigation into a white-collar terror module in Jammu and Kashmir’s Qazigund area, died of burns on Monday after attempting self-immolation.
The man died at a hospital in Srinagar, officials said.
Bilal Ahmed Wani had attempted self-immolation in Qazigund on Sunday. He was referred to SMHS hospital in Srinagar after his condition deteriorated at a hospital in Anantnag late on Sunday night.
Officials said he died due to burns around 12.30 am on Monday. Wani along with his son Jasir Bilal were picked up by the police for questioning in the terror module case.
Although Bilal was later released, his son remains in custody for questioning.
Wani is a neighbor of Dr Muzaffar Rather in Qazigund, who has emerged as the main accused in the ‘white collar terror module’ case.
Muzaffar Rather is currently believed to be in Afghanistan; His younger brother Dr. Adeel Rather was arrested on November 6 in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Police arrested two overground workers (OGWs) of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) organization and after their sustained interrogation, Dr. Adil Rather was arrested from Saharanpur. In October, the police had recovered an AK-47 rifle from the locker of Dr. Adil from the Government Medical College, Anantnag. He left his job at Anantnag Medical College in October 2024.
Adeel led investigators to Dr. Muzammil Ghani in Faradabad, from whose possession 2,900 kg of explosive material was recovered. Pulwama resident Muzammil, who worked with Rather at Al Falah School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, has also been arrested.
Muzammil’s terrorist associate Dr. Umar Nabi had escaped arrest. He died on 10 November in a car blast in Delhi’s Red Fort area, which killed 13 people and injured several others.
