The incident happened around 3.20am on Wednesday as one of the victims was walking back to his hotel in the coastal town of Cascais, about 20 miles from the capital Lisbon.
According to Portugal’s Public Security, the 34-year-old man was approached by three men who tried to touch his hat without any provocation. Police Said in a statement.
When he asked them to stop, he was punched three times in the face. The victim then called his friend, who was at the nearby nightclub TAJ, for help. When his 35-year-old friend arrived at the scene, a “verbal altercation” broke out between the two groups which turned violent.
Police said a suspect attacked the two men several times with a sharp weapon on their faces, arms and back. The suspects fled in a vehicle parked nearby.
When police arrived at the scene in Rua Afonso Sanches, they found both men covered in blood. The 35-year-old man was found “lying in a supine position on the ground, lifeless and with no apparent signs of life”, having been stabbed in the back, the police said in the statement.
The second victim was sitting on the sidewalk and suffered minor injuries to his face and right elbow.

Emergency services, including paramedics and firefighters, were called from Cascais and the neighboring city of Estoril.
The older man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was taken to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon for treatment.
US State Department told cnn He was aware of reports of attacks on two American tourists in Cascais, but has not yet named them. Independent The State Department has been contacted for comment.
Criminal police bodies and judicial police are continuing the investigation. Three suspects have been arrested and are being questioned by police, according to CNN, who said one of the men is charged with murder while the other two are accused of taking part in the attack.
