Washington:
A man set himself on fire Sunday afternoon outside the Israeli embassy in Washington, authorities said. U.S. Secret Service officials, the D.C. Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services posted online that the man was taken to an area hospital after the fire was extinguished. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the man was in a critical condition.
Local police and the Secret Service are investigating the incident.
The Israeli embassy has been the target of ongoing protests over the war in Gaza. The war in Gaza sparked pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protests in the United States.
The protests began on October 7, when Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that rules Gaza, killed 1,200 Israelis and took 253 hostages in a cross-border attack.
Since then, Israeli forces have launched a military campaign against the coastal enclave, leaving much of the area deserted and killing nearly 30,000 people, according to Palestinian health officials.
