Samad claimed that he acted in self-defense during the incident. LondonThe busy Edgware Road.

However, he was motivated by his belief that Mr Abdi was involved in the kidnapping and torture of a friend two days earlier, Judge Lynn Tyton told old Bailey On Thursday.

Samad was motivated by revenge and “acted with extreme aggression and determination”, the judge said.

He sentenced Samad to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years for Mr Abdi’s murder.

“The attack happened on a crowded street, where there were a lot of people in vehicles and on foot,” he told Samad.

“You can see how horrifying it was for the public.”

The judge told the court that on June 2, Samad’s friend Soufiane Chafi was kidnapped and tortured, with footage of the attack posted on social media showing him “naked and humiliated”.

Although there was no evidence that Mr Abdi was involved, Samad and his co-defendant Mohammed Mahmoud al-Hazza, 27, of Westminster, both believed he was involved.

The court heard that, on June 4, Samad was in the front passenger seat of a Seat Leon on Edgware Road, which was being driven by El-Hazza.

The victim, Mr Abdi, was driving a Porsche Cayenne, which he pulled up behind the defendants’ car with its lights on.

Both the cars stopped and Samad came out of the vehicle carrying a knife.

The stabbing was compared to a scene from the 'Wild West'

The stabbing was compared to a scene from the ‘Wild West’ ,James Manning/PA Wire,

Prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones Casey had earlier told jurors: “You would have thought it was like something out of the Wild West.

“Mohammed Abdi apparently saw him coming and ran out. Then the two of them started fighting – Mohammed Abdi was also armed with a knife.

“But within seconds of their fight starting, the defendant gained a significant advantage.

“He kicked and knocked Mohammed Abdi’s knife out of his hand and onto the street. So that means now, only one of them had the knife – the defendant.”

The court was told the unarmed victim retreated and got back into the Porsche, pursued by the defendant, who approached him before closing the car door.

Samad stabbed Mr Abdi three times, including once in the chest, which went through the cartilage of the ribs and into the heart, the court heard.

As the defendant drove into Seat Lyon, despite the efforts of members of the public and paramedics, Mr Abdi managed to proceed into Bell Street where he died.

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Mr Abdi’s mother, Sharon, and his sister, Amira, described him as a “dear son and a loving brother” and “a young man who had so much to live for”.

Judge Tyton said: “He fears his life has been stolen.”

El-Hazza was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
