a man has been found guilty murder For the murder of his former partner’s sister and her three children. House fire,
Sharaz Ali When he set a “devastating” fire at the home of Bryony Gawith and her three young children on 21 August 2024, he was “motivated by jealousy and fueled by alcohol and drugs”.
Doncaster The Crown Court heard that Ali, 40, wanted “revenge” on his former partner, Bryony’s sister Antonia Gawith. She was living there after ending her seven-year abusive relationship.
While Antonia managed to escape the house, 29-year-old Bryony and her three children, Dennisty Birtley, nine, Oscar Birtley, five, and Aubrey Birtley, 22 months, were trapped upstairs and died in the fire.
On Wednesday Ali was found guilty of the murder of Bryony and three children and the attempted murder of Antonia.
Callum Sunderland, 26, who accompanied Ali to the house and knocked on the door for her, was found guilty of the murder of Bryony and three children, but cleared of the more serious charge of murder.
He was found not guilty of attempted murder along with the alternative count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm to Antonia.
Ali participated via a video link from jail and was seen wiping away tears before the jury came into court.
Jurors heard that Ali wanted to “induce maximum suffering” with the fire and “he didn’t care who was there”, although prosecutors said he would have known that three children were home.
Antonia told police that Bryony had given her the “confidence and support” to leave her violent and controlling relationship with Ali in the weeks before the fire and that Ali had blamed her sister for the breakup.
On the night of the fatal fire, Ali and convicted arsonist Sunderland, who sometimes sold drugs for Ali, were taken to the house on Westbury Road, bradfordby Mohammed Shabbir, who was to be tried along with him Died of heart attack during remand,
Jurors heard they had stopped en route to fill a seven-litre canister with petrol. Meanwhile, Ali sends Antonia several aggressive messages and accuses her of being with someone else.
When they arrived, Antonia, who had finished her shift at Tesco at 12.30, was upstairs with Bryony in the master bedroom.
Doorbell footage captured Ali telling Sunderland, who was carrying petrol and a lighter, to “kick the door”, which he did before running back into the car.
Antonia said she heard the noise and went downstairs and saw an “enraged” Ali running into the house and shouting at her that she had started pouring petrol on him.
She described him trying to snatch the canister and lighter from her before running out in an attempt to get her out of the house.
As soon as she realized he had not followed her, Antonia ran back towards the house and saw Bryony, who had woken up, kick Ali down the stairs.
Antonia said Ali then hit the lighter, which ignited the petrol and set himself and the house on fire.
In a video interview given to jurors, Antonia tearfully told police how she “couldn’t save” her sister, nieces and nephew.
She said she was trying to get inside through the back door, which was locked, while shouting for help.
Antonia said Bryony, who had rang 999 as she came down the stairs, threw her phone out the window.
She told officers that she picked it up and “started shouting on the phone to send everyone – police, ambulance, fire brigade”.
“I was just screaming, trying to get back into the house and I couldn’t get in. I couldn’t save them.”
The court heard that the first police officers on the scene managed to break down the door and pull Ali out of the fire, but when firefighters arrived it was too late to save Bryony, who was found on the floor next to her bed, and the three children, who were all found in their own beds.
The footage played during the trial was edited to mute the scream, which presumably came from one of the children.
Prosecutor David Brook Casey said one of them may have been woken up by the noise and “frightened by the sound of the explosion”.
The court heard that Ali refused treatment from paramedics at the scene and was kept in a coma for months before his recovery began.
Jurors were told that two fingers on both his hands were amputated after the incident, he still uses oxygen and he still has difficulty speaking.
He told the trial that he wanted to kill himself in front of Antonia, and that his only intention was to set himself on fire.
Sunderland said Ali had recruited him to burn a car and he did not know anyone was in the house.
In a statement released after Bryony’s death, her family said the deaths of the children, known as “our B” and “Chuch, Augie and Strawberry”, had brought “unimaginable grief and heartbreak”.
The tribute read: “Our B was the life and soul of the party, music was a big part of her life, she loved music, singing and dancing, she was always singing and dancing with Chooch (Denistee), Augie (Oscar) and Strawberry (Aubrey).
“Bea was always a very happy, joyful, bubbly beautiful woman who cared about everyone and loved everyone, her children were everything to her, her whole life.
“Oggie had a very cheeky smile, he was cheeky but he was a shy boy, Strawbs was shy and demure with big blue eyes and blonde hair and Chuch was a beautiful, confident, friendly and creative young girl.”
