Kolkata, Nov 5 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a customer allegedly thrashed a tea stall owner to death because the biscuit he was served “didn’t taste good”, an official said on Wednesday, adding that the accused has been arrested.
The incident took place on November 4 in Khalerpool area of Raina in East Burdwan district of West Bengal. Police arrested Hussain Mollah on Wednesday after the tea shop owner died during treatment in the hospital.
The deceased has been identified as Farid Ali Shaikh, 50, a tea seller by profession and a resident of Machkhanda village in Raina. His tea shop was located in Khalerpool area.
On Tuesday, a few regular customers were present at the tea shop when Hussain Mollah, a mason and a frequent visitor to the shop, came for tea. He also asked for biscuits, which were duly served to him.
However, Molla complained that the biscuits tasted “bad” and started arguing with the shopkeeper. The verbal altercation continued for some time before other customers intervened and defused the situation.
Later, Molla allegedly returned to the shop carrying a bamboo stick and before Shaikh could react or understand what was happening, Molla allegedly started attacking him brutally.
Locals rushed Shaikh to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, from where he was shifted to another facility near Nawabhat. He died during treatment there on Wednesday morning.
Farid’s son, Sheikh Syed Ahmed, said: “Almost every morning, Hussain Mollah would have tea at my father’s shop, but would never pay. He always had some excuse. Even on Tuesday morning, he would leave without paying. Later, he would argue over the biscuit and ask for the money back. Although the locals had settled the matter, he came back with a bamboo stick and attacked my father on the head.”
Police said that on the basis of the family’s complaint, Mollah has been arrested. The body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigation is underway.
