Man allegedly attacked with metal rod but refused Hospital Six people required treatment for injuries including head cuts, police said.

according to a Merseyside Police A spokesman said Tuesday’s incident took place at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, where a man was arrested and detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police were called to the hospital shortly after noon after reports a man became “increasingly agitated” after his request for an appointment was declined.

He reportedly damaged a counter before attacking several people, believed to include staff.

A police spokesman said six people required treatment in hospitals and walk-in centers for injuries including head lacerations, injuries to arms and hands and bruising.

Police said everyone is in stable condition.

A 20-year-old man, living in Newton-le-Willows, from AfghanistanHe was arrested on suspicion of six counts of assault, affray and criminal damage.

A police spokesman said he was taken to a Merseyside police station and later detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

Police said the metal rod used in the incident had been recovered for forensic examination.

Newton-le-Willows ward councilor Seve Gomez-Aspron said his father, who lives next door to the hospital, had heard reports of people attacking staff and damaging the reception area.

He said: “I can only thank Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service for responding so quickly and effectively in circumstances where the danger was unknown.

“This is shocking, but as always we need to wait for the full facts, not speculation.”

On Wednesday, police said the scene at the community hospital remained in place, with a mobile police station on site.

Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said: “We know this incident will cause concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured about the increased police presence.

“I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers or contact their local police station.”
