Japanese police have arrested a 31-year-old man after his son died in a house. washing machine.

In April last year, Yuki Yamaguchi from Ibaraki Prefecture was arrested for “abandoning the responsibility to protect” after his two-year-old child fell headfirst into a washing machine, police said.

The toddler fell into a machine in Mr. Yamaguchi’s apartment and suffocated to death. Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

Mr. Yamaguchi, a temporary worker in Tsuchiura, north of Tokyo, told police he “just left him there without helping him,” referring to his son.

He was arrested on January 14.

Police said they believed Mr Yamaguchi left his son in the washing machine for nearly 20 minutes between 10am and 10.20am on April 27 before calling emergency services at around 10.29am to say his son was not breathing.

At that time, the child’s mother was working outside.

Police said the washing machine was in the child’s room and was not running at the time of the incident.

Japanese media reported that police suspected that the toddler used surrounding footholds to climb to the top of the machine, which is about 90 centimeters high. He then fell inside and could not get out.

In 2018, a five-year-old boy died after being found unconscious in a washing machine dryer at his home in Osaka. According to reports, the boy’s father called emergency services at around 3pm on January 27 to say his child had crawled into the washing machine and was unconscious.
