A man and a woman have been charged with murder over the death of a baby.

Avon and Somerset Police said Daniel Gunter, 25, and Sophie Staden, 20, were also charged with causing or allowing the death of two-week-old Brendan Staden.

He died at Yeovil District Hospital at around 5am on March 5.

Detective Inspector Mark Newbury, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “This is a particularly tragic case in which a very young baby has died and our thoughts are with Brendan at this time. My relatives are with me.”

“We have been conducting investigations at the hospital this week and we are grateful to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and their staff for their help in enabling us to do this.”

Gunter and Staden remain in police custody and are due to appear at Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
