One Of new york city mayor-election Zohran Mamdani Mamdani’s office said Thursday that the appointees had resigned over social media posts made more than a decade ago that contained anti-Semitic remarks.
In a statement, Catherine Almonte da Costa, who was tapped this week to join the incoming administration, said she expressed “deep regret” for the posts, which date back to 2011 and 2012 and were recently shared online by the Anti-Defamation League.
“These statements are not indicative of who I am as a mother.” Jewish Children, I feel deep sorrow and remorse for the harm these words have caused, da Costa said.
He was selected to head Mamdani’s recruitment office to handle “talent recruitment strategy”. The mayor-elect’s office said Da Costa worked in the office more than a decade ago and most recently held roles at a private communications firm and Sotheby’s.
Mamdani has accepted his resignation, his spokesman confirmed.
Mamdani said, “Catherine deeply regretted her previous statements and tendered her resignation, and I accepted it.”
The Anti-Defamation League declined to comment following da Costa’s resignation. The major Jewish advocacy organization shared three tweets from da Costa that it said “repeated classic antisemitic tropes and otherwise demeaned the Jewish people.”
Following Mamdani’s election in November, the group announced a new tool “to track and monitor policies and personnel” appointed by Mamdani, who has been a major critic of Israel.
Mamdani, who takes office next month, is under immense pressure to show that his opposition to Israel’s military actions in Gaza does not amount to anti-Semitism. During his campaign, Mamdani faced criticism for refusing to condemn the phrase “globalization of the intifada”, although he has recently said that he discourages people from using it.
