A Malaysian beauty queen has been stripped of her title after a video of her dancing while on holiday in Thailand went viral on social media. The video quickly sparked criticism, leading to her title being deposed by the Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA). While some called her video “inappropriate,” others defended her.

according toSouth China Morning PostKDCA president Joseph Pairin Kitingan said such behavior was unnecessary for a beauty queen who purportedly represents the spirit of Huminodun. Huminodun is a maiden in the mythology of the Dusun tribe in Sabah, known for her beauty and wisdom.

“If she was just a regular person, this wouldn’t be a problem, but she is a beauty queen and a public figure. Some people see the humor in her videos, some sympathize with her, others are dissatisfied and complain. We (KDCA) don’t want to be targeted and attract unwanted attention,” Mr Kitingan said.

“We learned that she went on a private vacation to Thailand with her family. On vacation we would do stupid things and get carried away. If this video hadn’t gone viral, no one would have known this happened,” he added. He also said the incident should serve as a warning to all Unduk Ngadau in the future not to make the same mistake again.
