Former Indian cricket team all-rounder Yuvraj Singh believes that Mumbai Indians should give Rohit Sharma the captaincy for one more season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 year, with Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain. There was a lot of controversy surrounding this decision. The captaincy was handed to Pandya after he completed a blockbuster deal from Gujarat Titans. In a recent interaction with Star Sports, Yuvraj said Rohit, a five-time IPL winner as captain, said that while he understands the decision to bring in a player like Hardik, MI should give the experienced player another A season’s worth of batters.
“Rohit Sharma has won 5 IPL titles as captain. It was a big decision to get rid of him. I would have found someone to join, like they brought in Hardik (Pandya), but I Still give Rohit one more season and have Hardik as vice-captain and see how the entire team functions,” Yuvraj Singh said.
“I understand from the team’s point of view, they have to see the future of the team. But then again, Rohit is the Indian captain and is still performing well, so it is a big decision,” he added.
Mumbai Indians, along with Chennai Super Kings, are the most successful teams in the history of the tournament, with both sides winning the title five times. Hardik won the trophy in his first season in GT, but Yuvraj pointed out that captaining MI will be very different from captaining GT because of the added expectations.
“Talent-wise, yes, he is talented. Being captain of Gujarat is different from captaining Mumbai. Expectations are high. Mumbai Indians have always been an important team,” Yuvraj said.
