Damascus: Information continues to emerge about a major attack in the Syrian city of Palmyra. 36 people were killed in the attack. Syrian rebels have infiltrated the city of Aleppo after detonating two car bombs, the Associated Press reported. Syrian rebel groups claimed on Telegram that they had captured more than 40 military bases belonging to the Syrian government forces. They succeeded in occupying many villages in the city of Aleppo in just a few hours. In 2020, with Türkiye’s help, the rebels reached a deal with Assad’s government that reduced major attacks there.
This is how the Syrian Civil War began
The Syrian civil war began with the “Arab Spring” in 2011. Pro-democracy supporters staged protests against the authoritarian government of Bashar al-Assad, who has been in power in Syria since 2000. Since then, a rebel group called the Free Syrian Army has been established. As rebel groups formed, the Syrian civil war broke out. The conflict further intensified when the United States, Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia joined the conflict. At the same time, the terrorist organization “Islamic State” has also taken root here.
More than 300,000 people died
After the ceasefire agreement was signed in 2020, only sporadic conflicts occurred here. According to the United Nations, more than 300,000 people have been killed in the decade-long civil war. In addition to this, hundreds of thousands of people had to be displaced.
