‘Maintain peace, restraint and dignity’: Pilots’ organization on Delhi airport attack case

The Airline Pilots Association of India (ALPA India) has issued an advisory to its members and pilots following the alleged incident of assault on a pilot and a passenger at Terminal 1, New Delhi on Friday, December 19.

Following the spread of viral video of the incident on social media, ALPA India issued a formal response saying that the footage was “deeply worrying”.

In its advisory signed by Captain Sam Thomas, President of ALPA India, the association clearly stated that it does not tolerate any form of violence, no matter the circumstances or instigation involved.

“At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that the current operating conditions in civil aviation in India are placing extraordinary levels of stress on flight crew, as well as increasing anxiety and frustration faced by fare-paying passengers. This combination has the potential to create a volatile situation if not handled with restraint and professionalism,” it said.

It further stressed that pilots should exercise caution, maintain professional restraint and avoid any behavior that could escalate or escalate beyond control. The advisory also reminds members that pilots must maintain the highest standards of conduct at all times on and off duty, especially when in the public eye.

“We fully recognize that provocations – verbal or otherwise – can be extreme. Nevertheless, it is imperative that pilots maintain calm, composure and dignity even in the most challenging situations,” the advisory said. The association has reached out to the pilot concerned to obtain his statement and will provide full support while cooperating fully with the authorities.

ALPA India has also formally written to the ministry and the regulator requesting a fair, transparent and impartial investigation into the incident.

The association reiterated that violence against any person – passenger or crew – is unacceptable and appealed to every pilot to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, situational awareness and self-control. The advice concluded, “Fly safe, stay professional.”

Earlier on Saturday, the Civil Aviation Ministry said that they have taken cognizance of the incident and a formal inquiry has been ordered. On the issue, the ministry said, “The Ministry of Civil Aviation has taken serious cognizance of the incident and has directed the airline to ground the pilot with immediate effect. A formal inquiry has been ordered. A detailed report has been sought from BCAS and CISF.”
