Questions about the tattoos follow the recent discovery of Plattner’s now-deleted online statements that included decrying military sexual assaults, questioning the gratuity habits of black patrons and criticizing police officers and rural Americans.
Plattner has apologized for those comments, saying they were made after leaving the Army in 2012, when he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
The oyster farmer and first-time political candidate is running a progressive campaign against Republican Susan Collins, who has held the Senate seat for 30 years. The crowded Democratic primary field includes two-term Governor Janet Mills.
Plattner has resisted calls to drop out of the race. She is supported by Vermont’s independent senator Bernie Sanders, who has described Plattner as a stronger candidate for the seat than Mills.
Plattner planned a town hall in Ogunquit, Maine, on Wednesday.
