Chennai, October 9 (IANS) Nagendran, the main accused in the sensational murder case of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu president Armstrong, died on Thursday at the Stanley Government Hospital in Chennai after his health deteriorated due to liver failure.
He was undergoing intensive treatment for the last few days. According to hospital sources, despite continuous medical care, Nagendran’s condition deteriorated and he did not respond to the treatment and breathed his last this morning.
Given his history as a notorious rowdy and the prime accused in one of Tamil Nadu’s most high-profile political murders in recent years, the body has been sent for post-mortem amid tight police security.
Armstrong, the BSP Tamil Nadu unit chief, was brutally murdered near his residence in Chennai on July 5 last year.
The murder shocked the state’s political arena, with party workers and allies leading widespread protests demanding justice for the youth.
After the incident, Chennai Police registered a case and arrested 27 suspects including Nagendran and another prime accused Ponnai Balu.
Two other suspects are believed to have fled abroad and efforts are underway to trace them through international channels.
Police investigation revealed that history-sheeter Nagendran, against whom several cases are pending, had allegedly masterminded the attack. After a detailed investigation, the police filed a comprehensive charge sheet before the Chennai District Principal Sessions Court, where Judge Karthikeyan is monitoring the trial.
Subsequently, the Madras High Court ordered the transfer of the Armstrong murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the need for an impartial and thorough investigation.
Nagendran, who was serving life imprisonment in connection with another case, was lodged in Puzhal Central Jail.
His sudden death occurred as the CBI continued to re-investigate the Armstrong murder. Authorities have informed the court about Nagendran’s demise, and further proceedings regarding the pending case are expected to be updated in the coming days.
