The Maharashtra government has allowed eateries, restaurants, hotels, orchestra bars and pubs across the state to remain open till 5 am on January 1 in view of New Year’s Eve celebrations, officials said on Wednesday.
The state home department issued a “permanent” order late on Tuesday night, allowing extension of operating hours of entertainment and hospitality establishments on select festive occasions. According to PTI report, this order will be applicable on Christmas Eve (night of December 24), Christmas (night of December 25) and New Year’s Eve (night of December 31) every year.
Hotel and restaurant associations have been seeking such permission annually, but approval was often delayed due to administrative procedures. The new order aims to streamline the process and avoid last-minute approvals, the official said.
Under the guidelines, establishments allowed to operate till 5 am will have to follow specific terms and conditions. The owners will have to deploy private security personnel both inside and outside their premises to prevent any law and order problem. In case of any violation or disturbance the license holder or owner will be held responsible.
The order clarified that the extended hours apply only to the use of the premises. Existing rules governing the use of sound and music systems will remain in force, including directions issued by the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court.
The official said the relaxation in timing is applicable only to establishments operating from closed building premises and not to open or outdoor spaces.
The Home Department headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also directed the police to maintain strict vigil to ensure law and order during New Year’s Eve celebrations across the state.
