Mumbai, Oct 13 (IANS) Maharashtra Congress on Monday said the party’s local units want to contest the upcoming local body elections independently, but the party has not yet taken a final decision.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala said, “These are local body elections, and we have asked the local units to decide on the alliance. However, in fact, our Mumbai Congress unit and even other units in the state have opined that the elections should be fought independently. We respect their opinion. However, no final decision has been taken yet.”
To a question about the fate of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which had contested the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously, Chennithala replied, “Local elections are about local equations and local units.”
Commenting on the possibility of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) joining the opposition MVA, Chennithala said there has been no discussion on it yet.
He said, “At the moment, MNS is not a part of the MVA. I am not an expert in predicting the future, and hence I can only comment on the present. As of now, there is no discussion with anyone about including MNS in the MVA or any such proposal.”
He said that an all-party delegation will meet the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra on October 14 on issues related to the voter list.
“I spoke to Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena-UBT MP) and he said it is an all-party delegation. Even invitations have been sent to Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The issue about the voter list was first raised by our leader Rahul Gandhi, and hence, we will participate in the delegation,” he said, citing senior party leader Balasaheb Thorat and Congress chief Varsha in the Mumbai delegation. Gaikwad will attend.
“Our state president is going to Delhi for party-related work and hence these two leaders will participate,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chennithala, after attending the political affairs committee meeting of the state Congress, accused the Mahayuti government of betraying the farmers, girl child and unemployed people of the state.
“Instead of providing adequate assistance to distressed farmers, the government has announced a fraudulent package by consolidating old schemes. The Mahayuti government is not even talking about farmer loan waiver.
He said, “The government is silent on giving Rs 2100 under the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The Congress party will organize protests and marches to make the government accountable for the issues of the people in the state.”
