Mumbai: Controversy erupted at Ideal College in Kalyan area near Mumbai in Maharashtra when a video of some students offering namaz on the campus went viral on social media. The students later apologized and the college administration assured to take appropriate action.
According to preliminary information, matters worsened when a video of pharmacy department students offering namaz inside the college campus surfaced online. After the video spread, activists of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal reached the college and lodged a protest with the administration. The local Hill Line police were informed about the commotion and immediately reached the spot to assess the situation.
The college administration said some students had offered namaz for a few minutes in an empty classroom. Someone recorded this incident and uploaded it on social media. After the video went viral, some organizations protested and demanded action against the students involved.
Police officers reached the college and controlled the situation. However, the administration requested that the matter be resolved internally, as it pertains to the academic campus. Respecting this request, the police maintained peace and allowed the administration to handle the matter.
After this the college management called the students for talks. He admitted that he had offered namaz but said he had no intention of creating controversy or hurting anyone’s religious sentiments. To avoid further misunderstanding, the students apologized to the administration and the staff present.
The administration stressed that discipline and adherence to institutional rules are essential in an educational environment. He said religious activities were not allowed on the premises and assured that strict surveillance would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in future. He also confirmed that necessary action will be taken against the students involved.
After the incident, the situation remained peaceful in the college campus and the police left the place after monitoring for some time.
At present, the police have handled the situation peacefully and the college is resolving the matter internally. However, no formal statement has been issued yet by the administration or police.
