World Cup winner Gary Kirsten was on Sunday appointed the white-ball chief of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. The ex-South African player is set to hold the position for the next two years, during which Pakistan will play two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy in 2024 and 2026 when it comes to major ICC tournaments. Soon after taking up the role, Kirsten put forward his views about future plans for the team and what current Pakistan player Ahmed Shehzad said was a “weak statement” from the new coach.

“If you can win one of those three ICC events, that would be an amazing achievement in itself, whether it’s an upcoming event or two years from now,” Kirsten said on the PCB Podcast.

“My job is to make sure the team performs at its best, it’s that simple. And if the team is performing at its best, we will always have a good chance of winning the trophy.”

Shahzad reacted to Kirsten’s statement and criticized her intentions.

“Gary Kirsten is a well-known coach but he will be briefed by those selecting the team. He is not based in Lahore nor has he grown up in Pakistan to understand the nature of different players,” Shahzad told Geo News. “

“At the end of the day, it is the people associated with the PCB who will guide them and 2 years will go by doing all this. They have already made a statement which I did not like. If we don’t do that,” Kirsten said. If we win the T20 World Cup, we can perform well in the next two World Cups.

“So already he is putting himself in a safe position. He has to show confidence and these are weak statements. No winner talks like that.”
