macy’s department store announced store closed As part of its program, in more than a dozen states Close 150 “unproductive” factories.
The department store chain announced the new strategy in February 2024, calling it a “bold new chapter.” Part of the plan is to “prioritize investment” in its 350 stores still open.

Most of the stores on the list will close in the first quarter of 2026, Axios reported. Macy’s told media outlets that clearance sales will begin in mid-January and last about 10 weeks.
The retailer’s comeback strategy appears to be working. Macy’s Inc., which includes Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, reported its strongest growth in more than three years in the third quarter of its fiscal year.
“As we execute our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make prudent decisions about where and how to invest, including closing unproductive stores and streamlining operations. These decisions are not made lightly,” Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said in a memo on Thursday.
“We are communicating directly with impacted colleagues first and are offering support, including possible relocation opportunities, as well as applicable severance and outplacement resources. We are grateful to all of these colleagues for their dedication and service to the company.”
