IN A major fillip to the construction of the proposed 3.8-km tunnel between Orange Gate and Marine Drive, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has emerged as the lowest bidder for constructing the project at Rs 7,765 crore.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is the nodal agency for building the project which will connect the Eastern Freeway with the upcoming coastal road.

The 3.8-km long proposed twin tunnel road will provide connectivity between Orange Gate, Eastern Freeway to Marine Drive on Mumbai’s coastal road. Each tunnel will have 2+2 lanes with one emergency lane. The financial bids for the project were opened on July 20 with the MMRDA expecting the project to cost Rs 6,000 crore. The two final bidders, which included L&T and J Kumar Infraprojects, quoted Rs 7,765 crore and Rs  8,589 crore respectively.

“Now the tender approving committee led by the state government will decide on the appointment of the contractor and only then the Letter of Intent can be issued,” an MMRDA official said.

Once constructed, it will be the third longest road tunnel of Mumbai. Currently there is a 1 km tunnel road, part of Eastern Freeway and 2.7 km tunnel, part of the coastal road project.
