Chennai, Nov 20 (IANS) A new low pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify in the next 48 hours, according to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Weather models indicate that a cyclonic circulation is now slowly moving in a west-northwest direction over the Comorin Sea and surrounding areas and will soon develop into a more organized low pressure area.
Meteorologists said another low pressure system is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday or the next day. The system is expected to move west-northwest and gain strength within 48 hours. If conditions remain favourable, the disturbance may further intensify into a depression, causing widespread rainfall over coastal and interior areas of Tamil Nadu.
As a result of changing weather conditions, heavy rainfall is likely over Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts today. In these areas, which are already experiencing intermittent rain for the last few days, isolated rain accompanied by strong winds may occur.
Local authorities have been alerted and disaster response teams have been advised to be on standby.
Chennai and its surrounding suburban areas are also likely to receive moderate rain and thundershowers.
IMD officials said convective activity is expected to increase after the evening, which may lead to sudden, heavy rainfall.
Residents have been urged to remain alert during lightning strikes and avoid open areas and waterlogged areas.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, especially in south-east Bay of Bengal and surrounding waters, as wind speed is likely to increase due to the developing system. Sea conditions may become rough, posing a danger to small boats and trawlers.
Weather experts say that this is the second major disturbance to form in the region during this phase of Northeast Monsoon.
With the strengthening of moisture-laden winds over the Gulf, Tamil Nadu is likely to receive more rainfall over the next few days, especially along the coast.
The IMD said it will continue to monitor the system closely and issue timely updates. Citizens have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions during heavy rainfall.
