Later in the interview, Tomlinson said that he believed Payne was the “safest pair of hands” due to having more experience than the others before auditioning for The X Factor, the reality television music competition that formed the band.
“We were all complete beginners, but by the time he made his debut he was already where he needed to be [X Factor] The audition,” he said. “None of us would have admitted it at the time, because as a young boy you have a lot of pride, but we all looked at him that way.”
“I think from a public perspective he was a very misunderstood person,” Tomlinson said. “If there’s ever a judgment on his character, I think nine times out of 10, you can look at that, and the reflection is that he was someone who just wanted to be liked.”
