Kolkata, Nov 7 (IANS) Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly and veteran BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday accused the local administration of deliberately digging up a road on the route of the BJP’s procession to mark the 150th anniversary of the BJP’s procession to mark the 150th anniversary of the BJP’s procession on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the country’s national anthem ‘Vande Mataram’ written by eminent Bengali writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
A procession led by an LOP officer was taken out from Devi Kali Temple in Thanthania in North Kolkata to Bankim Chandra Memorial Library in College Street in North Kolkata.
As the BJP procession reached the College Street crossing, it encountered a group of Congress workers who were reportedly protesting against some controversial comments made by some BJP leaders about Rabindranath Tagore.
After this a heated argument started between BJP and Congress workers.
However, a major clash between the two groups was prevented by the heavy police presence at the spot.
The procession, led by the LOP officer, again started moving towards Bankim Chandra Memorial Library.
When the rally reached the main access road of the library, the LOP officers got angry after seeing the dilapidated condition of the road there.
After this he accused the local administration of deliberately digging the approach road to stop the BJP procession.
“They (Trinamool Congress) deliberately dug up the road after hearing that I would lead the BJP procession. They claim to be great protectors of Bengal, Bengalis and Bengali culture. But look at the way they are insulting Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay by naming the library after him. The intellectuals who are standing with the ruling party (Trinamool Congress) in the state should come here and see the condition of the road.”
He also said that deliberately digging up the road to stop the BJP procession shows the narrow mindedness of the Trinamool Congress and its administration.
“Our only slogan is ‘Nation First’. Their (Trinamool Congress) mentality is anti-national,” he said.
