Look Madurai’s Vaigai river in spate after heavy rains, flood alert issued

Following heavy rains across Tamil Nadu, the water level in Vaigai river in Madurai recorded a rapid rise, prompting a flood warning. The regional meteorological department said a low pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around October 21, which will bring more rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours.

Heavy rain is forecast Also for the ghat areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala. The weather office said one or two rounds of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur over Chennai and adjoining districts.

Tamil Nadu has been receiving widespread rainfall since the onset of Northeast Monsoon on October 16. Kothagiri in Nilgiris received the highest rainfall of 14 cm, while Sirkali in Mayiladuthurai recorded 1 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours, the weather department said.
