Days after Naveen Jindal quit the Congress party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded him from the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat in Haryana. Mr. Jindal, the youngest son of industrialist Om Prakash Jindal, served twice as an MP from the same constituency. He will face Sushil Gupta of the Aam Aadmi Party, who represents the Indian group.

1. Naveen Jindal was born on March 9, 1970 in Hisar to Om Prakash Jindal and Savitri Jindal. He attended Delhi Public School, Hisar and then graduated in Commerce from Hans Raj College, Delhi University in 1990. In 1992, he earned his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas.

2. Mr. Jindal’s political career began in the early 1990s while attending the University of Texas. Mr. Jindal was an active participant in campus politics and also served as student body president.

3. In 2004, he contested his first Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket from Kurukshetra constituency. He retained his seat in 2009 when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) returned to power. Jindal lost his seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls when the BJP wave swept the country. In 2019, he was not fielded by Congress.

4. Naveen Jindal is Chairman, Jindal Steel and Power Limited. When he filed his nomination papers for the 2014 polls, Mr. Jindal declared assets of about Rs 300 crore. His mother, Savitri Jindal, is the chairman of the OP Jindal Group and is India’s richest woman with a net worth of $29.6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

5. Naveen Jindal has always advocated for the right of all Indians to display their flag with pride. He filed a petition arguing that the country’s flag laws restrict citizens’ rights to free speech. The Delhi High Court ruled in his favour, which was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2004.
