Lily Gladstone to play lead role in upcoming remake of romantic comedy The Wedding Banquet (1993).

This updated version of wedding banquetwhich was directed by Andrew Ahn and based on a story co-written by Ahn and James Schamus, increases the amount of queer representation by introducing a female pairing in addition to the main gay romance.

Shooting of the film began in Vancouver in May. The story begins with Min proposing marriage to her partner Chris, but Chris refuses.

Then, using her partner Liz’s offer to pay for her IVF procedures in exchange for her green card, Min persuades her best friend Angela to marry him.

Like the first film, everything falls apart when Min’s grandmother unexpectedly travels from Seoul to throw the happy couple a traditional Korean wedding feast.

Lee gave his approval for the remake, sharing a heartfelt message to Ahn and the group.

Bleecker Street and Shivhans Pictures are producing the film, which is scheduled to be released in theaters in early 2019.
