Lidl sees 'record-breaking' Christmas sales soar 10%

Liddell Sales surged 10% on Christmas Eve after nearly 51 million customers shopped at discount stores, cheering for a “record-breaking” Christmas.

The German-owned group said its UK operations had turned over more than £1.1bn in the four weeks before Christmas Eve.

The number of shoppers increased by 8% year-on-year, reaching a record high, and Lidl had nearly 4 million more customers than last year.

Ryan McDonnell, chief executive of Lidl GB, said: “2025 has been a record-breaking Christmas for Lidl, with more customers choosing to shop with us than ever before.

“By continuing to invest in low prices and champions British Food, without compromising on quality, we saw a spike in loyalty.

“As the fastest growing bricks-and-mortar supermarket, we’ve expanded to reach more customers across the country and are delivering excellent value this Christmas.”

Sales growth exceeded the 7% increase in the same month last year.

The figures show the group fired the starting gun in the retail sector’s festive trading update with supermarket giants Tesco Sainsbury’s will follow next week, as well as Next and mark & Spencer.

Lidl said December 23 was its busiest day for shoppers, but it added that customers were starting to prepare earlier than ever, with 30 million mince pies sold since September.

The company said that sales of seasonal agricultural products in the last week before Christmas Eve were 11,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 70%. Among them, easy-peel clementines were in high demand, and sales increased by nearly 40%.

Other top sellers include Comte de Senneval champagne, priced at £9.99 with Lidl Plus members, which saw sales rise by 260% in the busiest week, while the company’s luxury party food range also saw triple-digit growth.

Pistachio demand has enjoyed a recovery this year as Lidl customers bought nearly 100 tonnes of pistachio products during the festive period.

The group said its loyalty program Lidl Plus was a key driver of festive sales success, with active members rising 28% in November.

Mr McDonald added that the group would “continue to grow our footprint”, opening around 40 stores by 2025, taking its total number of stores in the UK to more than 1,000.

According to Worldpanel experts, the company is currently the sixth largest grocery chain in the UK and has achieved the largest market share gains in the sector in recent months.

Experts think Lidl could leapfrog rivals MorrisonCurrently ranked fifth, it will be ranked fifth in the coming months if its current momentum continues.
