eddie howe Glad to see Lewis Miley “rewarded” with match-winning goal newcastle won 2-1 Carabao Cup Quarter final win over Fulham.
Yoane Wiesa opened his account for the Tynesiders in the 10th minute, but Sasa Lukic equalized for the Cottagers six minutes later.
It looked as if the game was likely to go to penalties, before 19-year-old Miley headed home Sandro Tonali’s corner two minutes into stoppage time to send Newcastle back into the semi-finals.
Miley’s winner came after the midfielder filled in as a makeshift right-back and Howe believes the teenager’s versatility shows he has a “bright future”.
He said: “The goal is really for him. Levi is always composed and calm. When I said to him this morning ‘I’m going to play you at right-back’ his reaction was typical Levi, ‘Okay’ and he nodded his head.
“It was a training session today where we talked about what we wanted him to do.
“The fact that he did it for the team and did it in such a good way, I think you get rewarded for it and I think that’s his goal.
“I think he has goals, especially in Hawaii. Watch him score at Leverkusen, big goal, and a big goal today.
“He’s six foot four, he should contribute, but I think that’s the part of his game that will only get better, his physical ability, and you can see his technical quality, so it’s such a bright future.”
Miley moved into defense after Lewis Hall was not named in the squad – Howe confirmed the full-back felt some tightness in his hamstring – and an already stretched backline suffered a further blow when Tino Livramiento had to be sent off in the second half.
Howe’s team will compete in the semi-finals Manchester City Because they want to retain the trophy.
“Whatever we were going to get was going to be difficult,” Howe said.
“I think Manchester City is probably the toughest game we’ve ever had to prepare for. I think they’re an excellent team.
“But we’ve beaten them once this season and that was a memorable win for us, so we’re looking forward to that game whenever it comes.”
fulham boss marco silva Was disappointed to see his cup run end like this.
“It’s difficult to deal with. It’s very difficult for us to lose in the competition we were in and play the semi-finals next month, the way we lost in the last moments of the game,” Silva said.
“For us the first half was better in terms of performance, the first half was better than the second half. We conceded an early goal in the first half which was a bit unfortunate.
“The response was good, there was a good goal from us and we gained clarity in the game in the first half.
“We had one or two good moments, but there were not many good chances in the second half, really, and not too many dangerous moments.
“Still, the way we lost the game from a set piece in the final moments of the game is very difficult to bear.”
