Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, spewing huge columns of hot ash that later engulfed nearby communities. No injuries were immediately reported following the significant volcanic activity.
Indonesia’s Geology Agency confirmed that the early morning eruption spewed lava and dense ash clouds up to 10 kilometers (6 mi) high. Less than nine hours later, a second, more powerful explosion blew a distinctive mushroom-shaped ash cloud as high as 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) into the atmosphere.
The roaring volcano on the remote Flores island erupted three times on Tuesday. avalanche Clouds of scorching gas mixed with rocks and lava poured down the slopes in morning and afternoon eruptions. The third eruption of the day lit up the night sky with glowing lava and flashes of lightning.
Hadi Wijaya, head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, said in a statement that several villages were buried under ash and debris. He warned residents to be alert to heavy rainfall, which could lead to lava flows into rivers flowing from the volcano.

The 1,584-metre (5,197-foot) mountain is at the highest alert level since the eruption on June 18, and an exclusion zone was set 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) from the crater due to the eruption being high. Its massive eruption in November 2024 killed nine people and injured dozens. It had also erupted in March.
Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 280 million people that is prone to frequent seismic activity. It contains 120 active volcanoes and is located along the “Ring of Fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
